Introduction: The concentration of lactate is still the most important parameter in performance diagnostic. Lactate concentration depends on glycogen, test protocol and art of movement. The influence of blood volume is still not reported yet.
Material and method: 30 healthy and athletic male adults were examined. On one day a stress test (cycle ergometer – semi-recumbent) with ergo-spirometry, impedance cardiography and lactate diagnostics was performed. On a second day, tHb-mass and BV were determined with a modified carbon monoxide rebreathing method.
Results: It exists a middle significant negative correlation between blood volume and lactate concentration (BV vs. Laktat max r= -0,4; BV/FFM vs. Laktat max r= -0,46). Test persons with >100 ml BV/LBM show significant lower concentrations of lactate as persons with <100 ml BV/LBM (p=0,004).
Conclusion: The lactate concentration during exercise tends to be lower in persons with high blood volume. This could be caused by greater distrubution area and better oxygen supply of muscles.
